The baby newborn is ready for the feed within 3 to 4 hours after birth and he will be really happy when he will be put to his mother’s breast. After 40-42 weeks of pregnancy, a baby arrives and weighs 2.9 kg. If a baby weights less than 2.5 kg, he needs special cares and is classified as a low birth weight baby. A normal new born baby weight 2.5 to 3.5 kg has 50cm length, a 35 cm head circumference and a heart rate form 120 to 140 per minutes. His respiratory rate is 30 to 40 per minute. A high amount of bilirubin can cause jaundice, Bilirubin is eliminated by the liver and it takes some time to adjust to excrete it. The jaundice appears in a lot of newborns on the second day of his life and disappears by the end of the first week. Pathological jaundice may be toxic to the brain and cause permanent brain damage; it apeears when an infection occur or there is a mismatch between the mother and baby blood group.
A minute after your baby is born, and the doctors calculate his Apgar score; this is a process to find how he is doing, if he is ready to meet the world without medical assistance. The score, developed by Virginia Apgar in 1951, is now used in all modern hospitals all over the world, rates the baby's pulse, breathing, muscle activity, appearance, with a number from 0 to 2. The perfect score is 10; a score between 7 and 10 means that the baby is in good shape and post delivery care is not necessary. A score between 4 and 6 means that your baby needs some help breathing. Some oxygen or massages will solve this problem. Lifesaving measures are necessary if the baby has a score under 3; an immediate resuscitation is vital.
